MAY 6, 2020 Dear Church Family –
We miss you all dearly! There is no doubt that there is nothing as comforting, encouraging, and uplifting as coming together as the Body of Christ, worshiping and praising God together. The importance of smiles, handshakes, face-to-face conversations, and raising of voices together in song cannot be understated. However, as always, you are coping with these trying times and unusual circumstances the best you can.
We are thankful that those of you with internet access have the capability of listening to Charles’s recorded sermon made available on our website each Sunday. We are happy to now be able to invite you to join us for our live-streaming services each Sunday morning at 10:30 on the Laurel Avenue Church of Christ Facebook page, providing an extra measure of encouragement and assurance that God is in control.
Last Friday, Governor DeWine issued a new order called the “Stay Safe Ohio Order” which, in its latest form, explicitly exempts religious gatherings from its list of prohibited activities – meaning the state will not prohibit church services and gatherings. However, a closer look at the order and Department of Health guidelines show that all of the other recommendations and rules do not support the idea that gathering in a church is the safest thing to do. In particular, gatherings are supposed to be 10 people or less, face masks are supposed to be worn in public settings, and businesses have capacity limits on how many people can be in enclosed places at the same time. Those 65 and older, plus those with pre-existing medical conditions are still being told to stay home as much as possible. It is not until into June (providing things don’t get worse with the pandemic) that things will be getting less restrictive as far as meetings and gatherings. In other words, the entirety of the guidelines do not support safely worshiping together at this time.
After much consideration, prayer, and discussion, we have made the difficult decision to NOT open church for worship or other activities during the month of May. We understand that some may disagree with this decision, but please know that we are doing so for the safety of everyone. Meanwhile, we will continue to monitor updated state recommendations and trends around the area, and we will reevaluate our situation at the end of May. We will however continue to live-stream our online service using Facebook LIVE and provide an audio-only version of Charles’s weekly sermon on our website.
Just because we cannot be together physically, does not mean we are not together as a church family. Pray for each other, the local community, the state, the world, the healthcare providers, and all those who are suffering due to this pandemic. Also, as a personal request, please pray for our congregation and us as we try to negotiate these seemingly unprecedented times. Please remember that we love you and that God remains in control. He will lead us through this, and we firmly believe everyone will be stronger on the other side of this.
May God bless you all The Elders Laurel Avenue church of Christ
